I use SCAL everyday. Your Cricut is designed to cut anything - we just need to tell it what to do ! You don't need to forget about the cartridges you already have - they will work exactly the same way. Besides a download of the software, you need a USB cable to connect from your Cricut to your computer. You will see there is a port in the back of your Cricut just for this. Wow, now you are up and running ! When you open SCAL, you will see a mock up of your Cricut mat. You can import files, scan pictures and import them, or use all those wonderful fonts and dingbats available out there for free ! Place your image on the mat on your screen, anywhere on the mat, you don't even need to move your Cricut cutting mechanism. I have found that it is easier to determine the size you want using the screen mat than using the Cricut dials. Also, since you can get right down to the teeniest difference you can cut and nest with precision. You can distort your image, or "weld" your letters together to make one cut for words - no need to glue individual letters to your paper. AND you can save your file each time, just as you would a Word or Excel file. One of the best things about SCAL is that you are only limited by your own imagination. BUT - there are lots of free files out there for sharing. My personal favorite site is svgcuts.com. They offer a huge number of free files, but also have themed packages for around $5.99. For example, a garden theme, or guy theme. Check out that site. You will be surprised at what is available, and at very very little cost. I will be back with some more tips next week. What do you think ? Do you have SCAL ? What kind of tips do you have for us ?

How much does the program cost and do you know if it's compatible with a MAC?

It usually costs around $75 (I happened to catch it during a sale, so I paid less). Yes, there is a MAC version.

I got mine for $60, and it was on sale. The cost of one cart... Today I would suggest having a look at your fonts and wingdings. These can all be used with SCAL. You can download thousands of free fonts from the web, one site I particularly like is dafont.com, but there are many. Let us say you want trees, download wmtrees1 from that site, and you will be able to cut about 40 different trees. Leaves - lpleaves at the same site, and you will have about 15 different leaves, and another ten or so trees. Christmas, harvest, flowers, hearts - you can find so many cool shapes in fonts. And with SCAL - you can cut them all !!

I know this post is a few months old, but I have been debating about getting this software for sometime. I hardly use my Cricut but think this software would really make is so easy and would save money in the long run. I find that after I buy a Cricut cartridge, I only use one or two shapes from it and it sits on the shelf, wasting space.
Jan seems to love hers...I think I'm sold.
